Based on the history you provided, below are the possible causes for your dog’s coughing. Please click on the links for more information on these diseases. If you still seek further information, please refer to our Ask the vet page to ask a veterinarian 24/7.

Allergic tracheobronchitis
Complications from Heart murmur
Heartworm

*At this age with a cough of this duration with no recent exposure to other dogs, lung cancer also must be considered as a possible cause. Lung cancer in dogs is often the result of spread of a primary cancer elsewhere in the body, however, cancer of the lungs can be primary. A veterinary visit for your dog is therefore recommended ASAP.

  1. Jamie Kane says:

My dog Jilly is a black lab that is 13 years old. She coughs and sometimes throws up a flemy substance. The flem is clear and thick.
My dog Blake is a Jack Russell/collie mix that is 5 years old. He coughs and sometimes throws up a flemy substance. The flem is clear and thick.
I have a 4 year old german shepherd/Chesapeake retriever mix and she does not have any of these symptoms.
Is this something I should be concerned with?
